How to: Bypassing the Automatic Updates settings …

with one comment

One of our VPC’s is running with Windows Update set to Automatic.   Although the options are disabled (set through an logon script?), we wanted to change (the reason why is less important) it to Notify me…

Luckily for us…we’re local admins.  Follow this procedure to change the settings on a Window XP sp2 system.

  1. Open regedit and navigate to the UA node under
    HKLM | Software | Policies | Microsoft | Windows | WindowsUpdate
  2. Edit the AUOptions Dword and set the value to 2

Another fine reason why NOT to give developers full admin rights on there development machine. 🙂
